‘Twas a Dark and Stormy Night

‘Twas a dark and stormy night,
And ice was in the wind,
The gale ghosts howled around the house,
Trying to work their way within.

Lightning shattered through the sky,
Solid rain attacked the glass,
Something rattled on the doorknob,
But I just sat there on my arse.

The cat flap bounced,
Not once, not twice,
And something drenched and shivering,
Came dripping mud and slop and ice,
And I said,
Come on, sit beside by the fire,
It’s warm and dry and very nice.

It was Ginger and the little black,
And someone who was new to me,
They warmed and groomed and dried themselves,
And we scratched and clawed a pack of snacks,
Until there was enough for tea.

‘Twas a dark and stormy night,
The wind was stripping trees,
And I was glad I’d scratched the claw,
Scratched the claw upon the door,
A sign for those out in the storm,
A sign for anyone to see.

The snacks were nice, too.
